Blocked crypto withdrawals and 'unlocking fees': what to check before paying

7 min read · Updated 25 September 2026

A displayed balance is not proof that assets exist. Before paying another fee, verify the platform and preserve the payment trail.

Why the balance may not be real

Fraudulent trading sites can display invented profits and small early withdrawals to build confidence. When a larger withdrawal is requested, the account is frozen and new charges appear: tax, compliance, insurance, gas or account-upgrade fees.

A legitimate platform may run identity and source-of-funds checks, but the request should match its published terms and come through a verified channel. Sending more crypto to a personal wallet is not normal verification.

Checks to make before any further payment

Verify the exact legal entity and web domain, not only the brand name shown on screen.

  • Search the FCA Firm Checker and Warning List for UK-facing services.
  • Check the relevant national regulator for the entity and service claimed.
  • Compare the email domain and payment instructions with the firm's official website.
  • Ask for the contractual basis and calculation of every charge in writing.
  • Do not install remote-access software or disclose passwords, recovery phrases or one-time codes.

Build a usable evidence file

Save the complete deposit history, withdrawal requests, support messages, terms shown when you opened the account, and every wallet address or bank account used. Record any changes to the platform's explanation. An on-chain trace can then test whether your deposits reached the service claimed or were diverted elsewhere.

Realistic next steps

Notify your bank or sending exchange, report the firm through the appropriate official channel and obtain legal advice where the amount justifies it. Secwall builds and pursues an evidence-led recovery case with the relevant institutions; any freeze or restitution is authorised by those institutions under the applicable process.
